Gibloux Men’s Choir

Choir presentation
The idea of a men’s choir in the Gibloux was born in a context that might best be left unmentioned. In fact, it came to us at the back of a bar at a thoroughly indecent hour on a fine night in May. We realised that at evenings out, dinners, or any other events, young men and men simply could not resist breaking into song. So why not take the plunge? Why not give these men the opportunity to sing together?
So we embarked on this adventure, the outcome of which was uncertain. With the enthusiasm of a committee aged 21 to 24, we spread the word and spoke to those around us about this potential future choir. The result: 5 committee members and 2 members at the first general assembly on 31/08/2012. We began singing together and, as the weeks went by, singers joined little by little, reaching nearly 40 members three years after the choir was founded.
This choral ensemble aims to be traditional and secular, travelling through eras and vocal ranges and bringing certain treasures buried in dusty cupboards back to life. Before being a choir, we are a large family of men of all ages and from different backgrounds, and we share wonderful moments around our passion for singing.
The founding members are: Rémi Barras, David Neuhaus, Rémy Descloux, Gaël Ropraz and Marc Piazza
Since its creation, the Gibloux Men’s Choir has focused
mainly on four repertoires: Christmas music, French
songs, traditional Fribourg songs, and more scholarly works, notably from the Romantic period. Our ensemble is also made up of four voice parts: first tenor, second tenor, baritone and bass. Perched on the slopes of Mont Gibloux, it was only natural for us to offer you, through this first opus, our four favourite walking routes.
THE CHOIR DIRECTOR: David Neuhaus
Our Director was born on 24 February 1990. He is married and has two children.
He lives in Prez-vers-Noréaz and holds a Master’s degree in neurodevelopmental biology. He worked for a few years as a technical sales manager in molecular biology and now serves as Secretary General of the Catholic Ecclesiastical Corporation of the Canton of Fribourg.
Before beginning choral conducting as a self-taught musician with the Gibloux Men’s Choir, of which he is a founding member, this native of Vuisternens-en-Ogoz spent most of his time on the other side of the music stand. He began singing with the Maîtrise du Cycle d’Orientation du Gibloux in Farvagny in 2003 under the direction of Marc-Antoine Emery and performed there a few times as a soloist. A year later, he joined the parish mixed choir of Vuisternens-en-Ogoz until 2012, where he took on the roles of singer, soloist and, from time to time, organist. He consequently developed an interest in organ music, beautifully played by Simon Corti, which enabled him to replace him for a few religious services. He also sang with the Choir of St Nicholas Cathedral in Fribourg.
In June 2017, he obtained his CH 1 choral conducting diploma at the Fribourg Conservatory in the class of Jean-Claude Fasel, Kapellmeister of St Nicholas Cathedral in Fribourg. At the same time, he refined his knowledge of solfège with Pierre-Fabien Roubaty, also at the Fribourg Conservatory, and obtained his CM4 music culture diploma there.
In May 2018, he collaborated with the Fribourg Chamber Orchestra (OCF) and 150 singers, whom he was able to co-conduct in the Génération Disney project.
From September 2018 to December 2022, he was the Director of the parish mixed choir L’Espérance of Vuadens, with which he had the opportunity in November 2022 to conduct Michael Haydn’s Missa sub titulo Sanctae Theresiae (MH 797) for choir, SATB soloists and orchestra. The parish mixed choir of Vuippens joined this wonderful project.
