Named after G. Verdi’s famous opera Othello and the Othello Castle in Famagusta—whose story was written by W. Shakespeare—the Othello Polyphonic Choir was founded on November 10, 2010, in Cyprus. In addition to world choral literature, it has also included Turkish polyphonic folk music, choral works from different periods, and works by the Cyprus Polyphonic Choir in its repertoire, and continues its activities.

Awards & distinctions

The choir has given numerous concerts in Cyprus, Turkey, and Europe, and has also hosted choir festivals and workshops in its home country. After taking part in many international festivals, the choir achieved great success at the international choir competition held in Barcelona (Pau Casals International Choir Competition “Canco Mediterrania”) in 2019, bringing its country the silver medal for second place in the folk music category.

The Othello Polyphonic Choir recorded an album and a music book entitled “The Dream of Otello”, to be released in 2020. The choir is conducted by two choir directors, Rana Uluçay and Erkan Dağlı.
