Bulgapeya

Choir presentation

The Bulgapeya Folk Choir was founded on the first day of spring, March 21, 2019. A few women living in Brussels, guided by their love of Bulgarian folklore and the strength of their roots, following the idea of one of them, decided to launch their own creative space where this love could be expressed and flourish. This is the first group of its kind in Belgium, which can humorously be described as a musical enclave, working in friendly collaboration with the Bulgarian Embassy.

The name Bulgapeya comes from Bulga – Bulgaria – and peya, meaning I sing.

The choir quickly gained in popularity and began giving concerts in various Belgian cities, as well as in the Netherlands and Germany. It also takes part in international festivals in the Czech Republic and Italy. The repertoire includes songs from all 7 Bulgarian folk regions, so that audiences can enjoy the rich rhythms and sounds of Bulgarian folk music to the full.

With every performance, Bulgapeya audiences enjoy a different, interesting and dynamic music, rich in rhythms and irregular polyphonic meters.
In 2026, Bulgapeya will celebrate its first seven years of existence, the most important in the life of every person and every creation, the ones that lay the foundations and give direction to future development.

THE CHOIR DIRECTOR: Nadejda Nikolova

Nadejda began learning music at the age of 6 at the best music school in her hometown, where she studied choir, music theory and piano for 13 years.

At university, she was a soloist with Royal Dixieland, and at the same time began studying jazz and pop music, composition and choral conducting as a private student with renowned Bulgarian teachers.

Three years later, while still a student, she founded and directed the theatrical and musical group Experiment, where 50 students from different specialties develop and express their musical and artistic talents. With them, she founded the International Festival of Student Creation Une fête infinie, the only forum dedicated to all forms of art created by students.

A few years later, she founded the folk quintet Kontrapunkt, with whom she enjoyed great success. By this time, she was already a master of scenic arts at the Bulgarian National Academy of Theatre and Film.

She moved to Brussels and decided to set up a choir made up of Bulgarians living and working in this European capital. Thus was born Bulgapeya – little singing Bulgaria in the heart of Europe.
