Choirs Anguélos

Choir presentation

Founded in 1987 at the Chevreul Blancarde school in Marseille, the Anguélos choir is a mixed-voice teenage choir renowned for its artistic excellence and commitment to education. Its name, inspired by the ancient Greek word for “messenger”, reflects its mission: to transmit a message of joy, high standards and hope through song. Supported by an association under the law of 1901 and managed by volunteer parents, Anguélos is part of a global project that combines musical rigor, the transmission of values and cultural openness, in collaboration with the educational network of the Compagnie de Marie Notre-Dame.

The Choirs welcome young people from the sixth to the final year of secondary school (and since 2025, primary school pupils), with no selection or musical prerequisites. The emphasis is on commitment, determination and collective spirit, with rehearsals integrated into the students’ daily routine (recess, lunch breaks, evenings). Artistic demands – accuracy, rhythmic precision, vocal quality – are at the heart of the project, always combined with the pleasure of singing together and the pride of participating in ambitious projects.

From a pedagogical point of view, Anguélos functions as a school of life: the elders sponsor the newcomers, pass on the group’s codes and can even take the BAFA exam to supervise the Tours. This organization fosters responsibility, mutual support and a sense of belonging. Since 2022, musical direction has been provided by Yoann Pourre, choral conductor and pianist with a diploma from the Haute École de Musique de Genève, who combines high artistic standards with educational benevolence.

Anguélos boasts a varied and demanding repertoire, ranging from Gregorian chant to contemporary polyphony, Provençal songs, gospel songs and collaborations with renowned artists (Soprano, Jean-Claude Petit, etc.). The Choirs perform 20 to 25 concerts a year, in France and abroad (Canada, Germany, Hungary…), and take part in major events: Papal mass in 2023, Cannes Festival in 1997, May 8 commemorations in 2024 with young people from the Aide Sociale à l’Enfance, and the welcoming of the Olympic Flame in Marseille.

Their social and civic commitment is just as remarkable. Choristers regularly take part in commemorative ceremonies (November 11, July 14), sing in nursing homes or for charitable causes (Ukraine, Benin), and work with disadvantaged groups. These actions reinforce their civic awareness and sense of duty to remember, as the youngsters themselves testify: “It’s our history, and it’s thanks to these soldiers that we can live in this country we love” (Louis, Arthur and Fantine, aged 12 and 13).

Anguélos maintains artistic collaborations with professional ensembles (Orchestre Symphonia 13, Les Voix Animées) and cultural institutions. In 2026, the Choirs will take part in an international Competition in Saint-Raphaël, and will release two new CDs, recorded in July 2025, showcasing the richness of its repertoire, particularly in the Provençal language.

On the eve of its 40th anniversary in 2027, Anguélos is pursuing its objectives: to perpetuate the project, broaden the audience, strengthen French and European partnerships, and pass on its know-how. The challenge remains unchanged: to train responsible, committed and open-minded young people, capable of carrying out a demanding and meaningful collective project.

In short, Anguélos is much more than a choir: it’s an educational, artistic and civic lever, making a lasting impression on the young people who take part, and contributing to the cultural dynamism of Marseille and the surrounding region.

THE CHOIR DIRECTOR: Yoann Pourre

Born in Marseille, Yoann Pourre began playing the piano with his grandfather, improvising from the age of 14. After earning a DEM in piano at the CRR d’Aix-en-Provence (2016), he went on to perfect his skills in Geneva, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree and two master’s degrees (piano and educational sciences). He also explores improvisation for film-concerts (Méliès, Charlot…), in a style close to mickeymousing.

Passionate about opera singing, in 2024 he obtained a DEM in singing (CRR Marseille, class of Magali Damonte) with congratulations from the jury. He performs as a soloist (Messe de Franck in Geneva) and chorister (Fontana Cantabile, Les Chantres de Notre-Dame). Since 2023, Yoann Pourre has directed the Anguélos Choir (Marseille), a pedagogical project combining high musical standards and educational values, with tours in France and abroad. He also founded the Ensemble Vocal Echansonnerie (EvE) in 2023 and the Auguè children’s choir in 2024. Influenced by Debussy, Ravel and Poulenc, he composes post-romantic works (sonatas, melodies, vocal pieces) premiered at festivals (Nuits Pianistiques d’Aix, Alpilles Musicales…). He also champions lesser-known composers (Corrette, Soler) and plays harpsichord, pianoforte and organ.

A complete artist, pianist, baritone, choir director and composer, driven by a passion for transmission and boundless musical curiosity.

Awards & distinctions

Winner of the Prix CMF (2007, 2012) and the Prix CIC Michel Lucas (2018), he forms the Duo Napollon (with countertenor Rémy Bres) and the Duo Impact (with pianist Lucie Favier), performing at festivals such as Lavaux Classic and Musique dans la Rue.
