Il Calicanto

Il Calicanto

Choir presentation

Founded in 2000 as a children’s choir, the equal-voice youth ensemble “Il Calicanto” has developed over time through dedicated study and collective growth. The choir now comprises singers aged 16 to 30 and represents the youth division of the “Estro Armonico” association in Salerno. The group is actively engaged throughout the country in cultural awareness and social cohesion through music, performing a repertoire that includes sacred and secular polyphony, pop and light music songs, traditional songs (Neapolitan and otherwise), and ethnic music from folk traditions around the world. The choir, founded and directed by Ms. Silvana Noschese, has worked from the beginning on a comprehensive approach to the body as an instrument, regularly attending study seminars and workshops on various vocal and choral styles with masters of Italian and international choral music (Acciai, Busto, Cadario, Donati, Grassi, Kuret, Monte, Paraninfo, Tabbia, etc.), as well as seminars on vocal technique, psychophony, communication, and group dynamics. The founding objective of “Il Calicanto” choir is in fact to understand the vocal instrument, learning that performance quality comes not only from studying music, but also from strengthening the group and the individuals within it.

Awards & distinctions

The ensemble serves as a laboratory choir for major conducting schools throughout the country (“Guido d’Arezzo” Advanced School for Choral Conductors, “Il respiro è già canto” School for Choral Conductors in Turin), and is the beating heart of the “Cantagiovani” Choral Festival and Competition in Salerno. Over the years, it has participated in numerous national and international festivals (“Europa Cantat,” “Praga Cantat,” “Sacrum Convivium” in Ljubljana), as well as many renowned competitions such as Riva del Garda, Quartiano, Vittorio Veneto, Rimini, Matera, and Lake Maggiore, consistently placing among the top finishers. In 2023, the choir won the “Sacred and Secular Polyphony” section of the 12th “City of Fermo” Choral Competition and participated in the “City of Bastia” choral reviews, “Mondi Corali” at the Trento Conservatory, and the “In the City of Courts” International Choral Music Festival in Sassari. In 2024, the choir participated in the 57th edition of the “Trofei Città di Vittorio Veneto” choral competition, where it earned second place in the “Original Secular Polyphony by Composer” category, third place in the “Polyphonic Singing of Folk Inspiration” and “Tribute to Efrem Casagrande” categories, and the special prize for the most interesting program among those presented.
