Montreal Children’s Choir

Choir presentation

Founded in 2001, the Montreal Children’s Choir (CEM) is celebrating its 22nd anniversary. The initiative was launched by the pan-Canadian renowned conductor Iwan Edwards and parents determined to make choral singing accessible to all children in Greater Montreal. What began modestly with a choir of just 25 children now includes five choirs with more than 135 choristers aged 5 to 21, from over 30 elementary schools, secondary schools, and CEGEPs. Over the years, united by their passion for singing, the young singers have had the privilege of working under the direction of Iwan Edwards (2001–2009), Andrew Gray (2009–2016), and Léa Moisan-Perrier (2016–).

From the very beginning, the CEM established a place for itself on Montreal’s cultural scene and has performed many times with several renowned classical ensembles such as the Montreal Symphony Orchestra (OSM). The CEM has also collaborated with many well-known pop artists, including Half Moon Run, Patrick Watson, and Les Cowboys Fringants for album recordings, as well as Roger Waters (The Wall) and Kenny Rogers to share the stage.

Awards & distinctions

This year, in order to broaden its reach, the CEM partnered with the community organization Partageons l’espoir, whose mission is to foster young people’s development and success in the community through high-quality programs. This collaboration led to the creation of two CEM choir extensions that rehearse within the organization in Pointe-Saint-Charles as part of their El Sistema-inspired program.

The CEM’s diverse repertoire reflects Montreal’s multicultural character. Accompanied by professional musicians, each concert offers a different musical adventure in terms of instrumentation, sung languages, and styles explored. Indeed, while classical music holds an important place in the repertoire selection, the CEM also takes great pleasure in exploring other styles, including jazz, popular music, folk, and world music. The choir also pays tribute to the work of Canadian composers as well as to Quebec’s rich musical heritage.

Over the past twenty years, the CEM has welcomed hundreds of young choristers and is proud to have built a strong and diverse community. Thanks to the CEM, the future of choral singing is full of promise.
