Gdynia Choir

The Academic Choir of the Maritime University was established in Gdynia in 2001. With the support of the Maritime University authorities, the group has become a fully-fledged academic choir and the official cultural institution representing the University in Poland and abroad.
It has performed numerous concerts in Poland and throughout Europe, including Germany, France (also during the ‘Nova Polska’ festival in France under the honorary patronage of French President Jacques Chirac), Lithuania, Spain (also as part of a cultural exchange with the choir of the University of Salamanca), Romania, and Italy (also during the Voci d’Europa Festival in Sardinia).
In 2023, the choir performed at the annual Spring Concert in New York, as part of an exchange with the Barnard Columbia Chorus.
THE CHOIR DIRECTOR: Karol Hilla
Karol Hilla graduated from the Gdańsk Academy of Music in 2003.
From 2002 to 2008, he studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg with Professor Wolfgang Zerer. He graduated from HMT Hamburg ‘with distinction’.
He has performed as a conductor and organist at festivals in Poland and abroad: in Germany, Russia, France, the Netherlands, Finland, Sweden, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Lithuania, Slovakia, Romania, and the United States.
He is the founder and conductor of the Choir of the Maritime University of Gdynia since 2001. Karol Hilla and his Choir are laureates of the ‘Pomeranian Passion Song Competition’ in Szemud, Poland (1st prize and best conductor award), the Eisiskas International Choral Music Festival, Lithuania (1st prize), the ‘Canco Mediterrania’ International Choral Festival and Competition in Barcelona, Spain (2nd prize for sacred and folk music), the Liviu Borlan International Choral Competition, Baia Mare, Romania (gold diploma), and the V Polish University Choral Competition Święty Krzyż / Kielce 2018, Poland (2nd prize). He has also served as a juror for organ and choral Competitions.
Karol Hilla is a professor at the Łódź Academy of Music and a teacher at the Gdynia School of Music.
