Furiant Chamber Choir

Choir presentation
The Furiant Chamber Choir was founded by Steve De Veirman in September 1995 and quickly developed into a balanced ensemble performing at the highest level. The name “Furiant” is synonymous with lively, energetic, and expressive music, performed by young and powerful voices. The choir primarily seeks to bring together a group of voices that is as homogeneous as possible. But Furiant also invests a great deal of time and energy in the technical development of each individual—calling upon qualified vocal coaches when necessary.
Through its repertoire, the choir strives to convey an impression of the full range of polyphonic musical literature. It endeavors to showcase the vibrancy of colors and expressions in chamber choir music, across different styles and decades. Recent works created by composers such as Eric Whitacre, Jake Runestad, and Ola Gjeilo are also frequently performed.
The Chamber Choir has participated several times in the Belgian “Choir of the Year” competition, and was a finalist in the Lemmens Institute Concert in 2005, and a semi-finalist at Flagey Studio 4 in 2004.
Furiant has also participated in other major projects such as a performance of the musical ‘West Side Story’, a theatrical production of ‘Amadeus’, and the 2013 ‘Ode Ghent by Night’ edition organized by the Ghent Festival of Flanders. In November 2014, Furiant hosted the Thai Suanplu Chorus at St. Nicholas Church (in Ghent) and participated in the ‘1000 Voices for Peace’ show, commemorating the First World War, in collaboration with the Festival of Flanders in Brussels. In January 2016, Furiant was promoted to the highest division of the East Flanders provincial choir competition.
In 2018, Furiant hosted the ‘Cor de Cambra de Granollers’ from Barcelona under the direction of Josep Vila Jover. In return, Furiant visited their colleagues last October and joined them for several concerts in Barcelona.
THE CHOIR DIRECTOR: Steve De Veirman
Belgian choir conductor Steve De Veirman began his musical studies in 1982 at the Muziekacademie Emiel Hullebroeck te Gentbrugge. He then pursued higher musical studies at the Lemmensinstituut in Leuven. He combined instrumental training in piano, cello, baroque flute, and voice with theoretical and pedagogical skills. To become proficient in choral conducting, he took lessons with Florian Heyerick, Rudy Tas, Johan Van Bouwelen, and Erik Van Nevel. He later specialized under conductor and composer Kurt Bikkembergs. His choral and vocal experience was further enriched by singing with various professional choir and ensemble projects such as Ex Tempore, Collegium Brugense, Capella di Voce, Goeyvaerts Consort, Musa Horti, and Psallentes.
Steve De Veirman conducted the Papageno children’s choir and the St. Camilluskoor and spent three years at the musical helm of the Arenberg Kamerorkest in Leuven and the Gentse Schola Cantorum in Ghent. He also conducted the Volwassenenkoor Vokamando for five years. Since September 2011, he has also been the choir conductor of the renowned Cantabile-Gent choir, which he conducted until its final note in April 2017. Today, he still conducts the Jeugdorkest Forza Muzica, the Kamerkoor Furiant, the Jongerenkoor Furiakanti, the Dameskoor Furiosa, and the Jeugdkoor Furiale.
