Choir presentation

The mixed choir K.O.O.R. was first formed in January 2012. Conductor Raul Talmar is the founder, spirit, and artistic conscience of the choir. He has worked as a conductor for 35 years and has encountered many high-level Estonian choirs.

The members of K.O.O.R. are long-standing musical partners of Raul Talmar himself, dating back to his time with the Noorus mixed choir.

Since then, K.O.O.R. has given dozens of concerts on various occasions and in different venues.

Awards & distinctions

In 2013, K.O.O.R. participated in the 13th International Choir Festival “Tallinn 2013” and won 2nd prize.

In September 2013, the choir participated in the 20th International Festival of Orthodox Sacred Music CREDO and won first prize.

In July 2014, immediately after the Song Festival, at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in Wales, K.O.O.R. won third place in the folk song category.

June 2015, the Crakovia Cantans 2015 International Choir Competition concluded for K.O.O.R. with 1st place in the folklore, gospel, and pop music category, and 2nd prize in the mixed choir category.

In April 2016, at the “Cork International Choral Festival 2016”, the Heinrich Schütz Award was presented, and in June 2019, the Grand Prix of the 9th International Choral Festival “Chernomorski zvutsi” and the Raul Talmar diploma for a masterful choir conductor from the Bulgarian Association of Musicians and Dancers were awarded.

During the 2021/2022 season, the choir participated online in the 3rd Tokyo International Choir Competition and received the silver award.

THE CHOIR DIRECTOR: Raul Talmar

Raul Talmar (born in 1959) graduated as a choir conductor from the Tallinn Conservatory in 1982.

He sang in the Noorus mixed choir from 1977 and was its principal conductor from 1991 to 2012.

He currently conducts the K.O.O.R. mixed choir and the concert choir of St. Charles Church in Tallinn. Previously, he worked with the Tallinn University of Technology Academic Male Choir, the Helsinki Business College Male Choir, the Klementi Sewing Factory Female Choir, the Pärnu Mattone Chamber Choir, the Leelo National Girls’ Choir, and the Tallinn Russian Choir.

Awards & distinctions

In 2006, he was named Conductor of the Year by the Estonian Choral Association.

Raul Talmar has also served as President of the Estonian Choral Association.

Since 1993, Raul Talmar has conducted mixed and female choirs at youth song festivals and, since 2004, at all Estonian Song and Dance Festivals.

In 2011, he served as the artistic director of the Estonian program for the 16th Gaudeamus student song festival.
