Odyssées Choir

Choir presentation

Founded in 1984 in Claye-Souilly (Seine-et-Marne) under the name “Claye Vocale,” the choir was directed by Marie-Hélène Caspar from 1986.

Since September 2020, the choir has been directed by Nicolas de Valdeverde.

Since its inception, the choir has set two essential objectives:

  • To promote choral music and, more generally, classical and world music in Claye-Souilly and the surrounding areas
  • To export the choir’s repertoire abroad.

These objectives have been largely achieved, as the choir has organized dozens of concerts in Claye-Souilly and Seine-et-Marne.

It has invited numerous foreign choirs and has traveled worldwide on countless occasions.

It has participated in several festivals (Romania, Russia, China, Italy, etc.) and, in 2006, created its own festival in Claye-Souilly (Musiques du Monde).

Under the leadership of Marie-Hélène Caspar and then Nicolas de Valdeverde, “Claye Vocale”—which in the meantime became “Odyssées”—has continued on this path.

The partnership with the city has been strengthened. Projects initiated by the choir have been realized over recent seasons. Notably in Claye-Souilly and Meaux, a project aimed at raising awareness of the world of Opera.

Awards & distinctions

The 2016-2017, 2017-2018, and 2018-2019 seasons allowed the choir to explore a previously unknown repertoire: that of composer Karl Jenkins. Excerpts from his Stabat Mater were presented in concert in 2016 and 2017, and the complete work was performed in Savigny-le-Temple, Paris, and Meaux on November 16, 17, and 18, 2018.

However, new additions have also allowed the choristers to explore other musical universes:

  • Excerpts from Carmina Burana by Carl Orff
  • Medleys of French songs
  • Works by American composers
  • Spirituals
  • New Christmas carols

The objective is both to satisfy the audience during concerts scheduled in our region and to prepare effectively for future tours. Contact with excellent choirs from around the world (notably Russian, Chinese, and Lithuanian choirs) has always been an extraordinary stimulus for “Odyssées.”

For 2022, the choir is preparing a program of French songs and Fauré’s Requiem.
