MSGA Children’s Choir

Choir presentation

The MSGA Children’s Choir comes from the Sándor Márai secondary and primary school, where teaching is conducted in Hungarian. The school’s various choirs (Children’s Choir, Youth Choir and Girls’ Choir) have been working on choral singing continuously since their founding in 1969.

Over the years, the various choirs have welcomed more than 800 members.

Today, 340 Hungarian children aged 6 to 19, living in Košice and the neighbouring region—bearing the name of the world-renowned Hungarian writer Sándor Márai, born in our city—are enrolled, hence the acronym MSGA.

The choirs are made up of pupils aged 9 to 15. The children’s choir rehearses regularly every week, but many of our singers sing in parallel in two choirs (the children’s choir and the girls’ choir), which allows for the continuous renewal of the choirs.

There is no specialised music education at the school, and most singers have never attended music schools. It is the passion for singing together that keeps the tradition of choral singing alive.

The repertoire ranges from the Renaissance to the 21st century, a cappella as well as with musical accompaniment, in various languages: Hungarian, Slovak, Latin, English and Italian.

Particular emphasis is placed on mastering unison singing through arrangements of traditional Hungarian songs.

Awards & distinctions

The choir has performed on numerous occasions with folk groups, opera singers and even a pop band, and regularly takes part in workshops led by foreign conductors.

The children’s choir ranks among the best artistic groups in Slovakia. Every three years, the children’s choirs take part in international competitions:

– Gold medal and special jury mention: National Choir Competition “Éneklő Ifjúság” in Eger, Hungary (2018)

– 1st prize in the girls’ choir category at the 66th EMJ International Children’s and Youth Choir Festival, Neerpelt, Belgium (2018)

THE CHOIR DIRECTOR: Silvia Kekenák and Andrea Ferencei

The choristers are led by two choir conductors: Mrs Silvia Kekenák and Mrs Andrea Ferencei, both former choristers, with Mrs Kekenák also being the daughter of the founder of our choirs.

The conductors have worked together for more than 20 years within the same school, and they have developed and shared a thriving cooperation based on mutual respect, the joy of teaching young people, and a love of choral singing.
