Little Singers

The Pequenos Cantores de Valencia choir

Choir presentation

The Pequenos Cantores de Valencia choir is made up of around 90 teenagers aged 12 to 18.
Founded in 1963 by Jesús Ribera Faig, its current director is Carmina Moreno Llabata. With fifty years of history, its impact on the world of choirs and music has been very significant.

Over all these years, more than 450 works have been performed in over 700 concerts throughout the Valencian Community, as well as in almost all of Spain and in 15 other European countries, demonstrating the importance that the Little Singers have had—and continue to have—in Valencia’s cultural sphere.

Half a century of activity during which they have completed 48 concert tours across Spain and fifteen other European countries, promoting the image of the Valencian Community and our music by taking part in various festivals and competitions.

Awards & distinctions

They have consistently received excellent press reviews, strong results, and major awards, from the first international prize for children’s choirs at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in 1970 to the silver medal at the 3rd Bratislava International Festival of Young Music in 2011, the Gold Medal of the City of Valencia in 2014, and the Jaime I Medal for Cultural Merit in 2015.

In addition, they have carried out countless friendly collaborations and exchanges with other Spanish, Argentine, Austrian, French, and German choirs.
Since their creation, they have explored all kinds of musical repertoire—sacred, secular, light, traditional, popular, piano, singer-songwriter, Christmas music, jazz…—and recorded nearly ten albums.

They have performed more than twenty symphonic and choral works and operas with professional orchestras such as the Orchestra of the Valencian Community, the Valencia Orchestra, the National Youth Orchestra of Spain, the Philharmonic Orchestra of the University of Valencia, the Istvan Kiraly Symphony Orchestra of Budapest, the Szczecin Symphony Orchestra… as well as distinguished Valencian and European adult choirs.

They have been conducted by renowned directors, both national and international, such as Lorin Maazel, Yaron Traub, Omeir Meir Wellber, Manuel Galduf, Enrique García Asensio, and Eduardo Cifre, among others.

Today, a large number of former “little singers” are members of the city’s finest adult choirs, and more than twenty of them have founded or directed as many Valencian choirs, while many others have oriented their professional lives toward music, becoming secondary-school and conservatory teachers, singers, instrumentalists, stage directors, and renowned composers.

Musicians of the stature of Isabel Monar, Eugenia Pont, Erika Escribá, Isabel Rey, Josep Lluís Valldecabres, José Ramón Gil Tárrega, Juan de la Rubia, and many others began their training with us.

The Little Singers of Valencia have not only been the breeding ground for so many fine musicians who make the Valencian Community a musically rich land, but they have also seen the birth of Albada, Bardissa, and Minicantores, their three sister children’s choirs.

Thus, what began as a single choir has become what it is today: a large choral school open to boys and girls aged 5 to 18, which today celebrates 50 years of history: the choral school of Grandes Cantores de Valencia.
