Schola Cant. Sopianensis

Choir presentation
The Schola Cantorum Sopianensis Choir was founded in 2001 within an association that has existed since the mid-1990s in the city of Pécs, Hungary, a city with significant choral traditions.
Its success in European competitions in which the choir has participated is due not only to the quality of its performance but also to its rich and vibrant repertoire.
From the Renaissance to the late Romantic period, original works are regularly performed by the choir (G. Gabrieli, H.L. Hassler, C. de Rore, S. Calvisius, M. Praetorius, J.P. Sweelinck).
In 2012, it recorded a CD of Latin motets by contemporary Hungarian composers (Csemiczky, Gyöngyösi, Orbán, Vajda). These composers have often proposed works to the choir director.
Pieces by the great composers of the Romantic period and the turn of the century (Peter Cornelius, Florent Schmitt, Maurice Duruflé and others) are highly appreciated at festivals.
The choir members also enjoy performing pieces from the early Baroque repertoire (Buxtehude, Gibbons, Pachelbel, Praetorius, Purcell, etc.).
THE CHOIR DIRECTOR: Valér JOBBÁGY
Choir director Mr. Valér JOBBÁGY is a professor at the Budapest Academy of Music and also directs several other choirs (Szekszárd Madrigal Choir, Pécs Cathedral “Palestrina” Choir).
He has won numerous prizes with his various choirs at international festivals and competitions in Hungary and abroad.
