Carmo Youth Choir

Choir presentation

Coro Juvenil do Carmo was founded in 1999 by its director, Helena Almeida, at the request of the parish priest at the time, Father Egídio Ferreira.

Since then, this group’s main objective has been to sing at the liturgical celebrations of the Igreja do Carmo, more specifically at Masses with the children of the parish of São João Baptista (Carmo), in Beja, and for this purpose they rehearse regularly on Saturdays after catechesis.

As a group made up of children and teenagers who attend the parish catechesis, the choir undergoes changes in its members almost every year, as the choristers grow up and their voices change as well.

Awards & distinctions

Since 2001, it has regularly taken part in the Concerto de Reis do Coro do Carmo. It was invited to serve as the lead choir for the celebrations of the National Children’s Pilgrimage to Fátima in 2008 and 2009.

In April 2011, it took part in the 3rd Meeting of Children’s Choirs organised by the Sanctuary of Fátima. As part of the City Festivities, it was invited to participate in the Choir Meeting organised by the Beja Chamber Choir. Last May, it travelled to the Monastery of Montserrat in Barcelona, where it gave a concert and sang at Mass in the city’s cathedral.

The choir is often invited to take part in celebrations held by social institutions such as the hospital, homes for the elderly, parishes, and other church movements. Coro Juvenil do Carmo is a group that, throughout its more than twenty years of existence, has promoted choral and educational practice, offering this experience free of charge to more than a hundred children who have been part of it.
