Choir presentation

The La Flor Choir began its activities in the 50s, and has since given concerts throughout the Asturias region.
At national level, it performs in various localities in A Coruña, Albacete, Alicante, Barcelona, Bilbao, Burgos, the Canary Islands, Granada, León, Lugo, Madrid, Murcia, Palencia, Pamplona, Salamanca, Tarragona, Valencia, Vigo and Zaragoza.
Outside Spain, she has performed in Argentina, Belgium, Switzerland, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, France, Italy, Miami, Uruguay, Portugal, Puerto Rico, the Czech Republic, the Dominican Republic, Switzerland, the Vatican and Venezuela.
Many of these concerts took place in Asturian centers.

In 1989, it was one of the groups invited to the mass celebrated by Pope John Paul II during his visit to Asturias.
It’s worth noting that in 2017, the choir took part in the International Choir Festival Prague Summer Choral Meeting (Prague) and in 2023, it took part in the International Choir Festival in Morocco.
The choir performed during the visit of Prince of Asturias Felipe de Borbón to Lena to present the Pueblo Ejemplar (Exemplary Village) award to the parish of Xomezana and the Güerna Valley in 1998.
It has won numerous awards and distinctions. A square in the French town of Annoix bears his name, and in 1999 he was named “Cultural Ambassador of Lena”.
Similarly, from 2022, the gardens of the Lena town hall will be called “Coro La flor Gardens”.

  • First prize at the III Otoño Polifónico Arandino in 1986 (Aranda de Duero)
  • Gold medal from the Benedictine Abbey of Tiberina Island, Rome, 1986
  • Puerta de Asturias” prize in 1991
  • Gold medal from the town hall of Vesdùn (France) in 1994.
  • Gold medal from the Conseil Général du Cher (France) in 1994.
  • Third prize at the Zaragoza International Music Competition in 1997.

The choir has recorded a solo album of 12 works, another in collaboration with the Banda de Gaitas Güestia, and in 2002 released its third album, the CD “Carcelera”, after a year of recording.

THE CHOIR DIRECTOR: Jose Manuel Alvarez

Jose Manuel Alvarez Fernandez began his musical studies with Gregorian music masters Father Samuel Rubio Calzón and D. Paulino Ortiz de Jócano at the Royal Monastery of El Escorial. Paulino Ortiz de Jócano at the Royal Monastery of El Escorial.
He then attended several courses organized by the Asturian Choirs Federation in Luarca and at the Palais de Granda in Colloto (Oviedo).
He also took part in conducting courses at the Seminary of Oviedo.
He held the position of choir director, first with Agrupación Coral La Flor (Lena) between 1999 and 2001, and later, in 2017, he took over the direction of the choir.
