New World Singers

Choir presentation

Described as “rare, radiant, and beautiful” by composer Nick Page, the New World Singers of the Columbus Children’s Choir already have a long stage career behind them.

Directed by Jeanne Wohlgamuth and composed of students from sixth to twelfth grade, the New World Singers possess the technique and artistry to access world-class ensembles.

Since its inception, the Columbus Children’s Choir has had the honor of performing at several prestigious national venues, including the White House.

On the international stage, the New World Singers have given concerts in many European countries, including Germany, Russia, Italy, France, Canada, Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia, and Spain.

In June 2014, they participated in the renowned International Festival of Music and Dance in Granada.

During the summer of 2017, the Columbus Children’s Choir singers traveled to Austria where they engaged in a collaboration/concert with the Vienna Boys’ Choir and then to Hungary where they were selected as the demonstration/performance choir for the 29th International Kodály Choral Symposium.

In June 2018, the New World Singers had the honor of joining the Columbus Youth Symphony Orchestra for a joint concert at Carnegie Hall.

Awards & distinctions

In 2010, 2019, and 2021, they won first place at the American Prize for Choral Performance in the Youth Choir category.

They placed 1st in their category at the Rimini International Choral Competition 2021.

The choir’s female ensemble won the gold medal in its category as well as the Grand Prix at the Rimini International Choral Competition 2021.

THE CHOIR DIRECTOR: Jeanne Wohlgamuth

Since taking over as artistic director of the Columbus Children’s Choir in spring 2011, Jeanne has paved the way for a new and exciting musical adventure and has spared no effort in making the Columbus Children’s Choir a source of pride for our city.

Jeanne Wohlgamuth’s passion is reflected in the care she takes in enriching the musical culture of her young singers.

Additionally, Jeanne Wohlgamuth offers sight-reading workshops during choral rehearsals for the Ohio Choral Directors Association, the Midwest Kodály Music Educators Conference, Ohio State University, Capital University, Columbus City Schools, Tri-City Kodály Music Educators, and The Ohio Music Educators Association.

Jeanne Wohlgamuth is currently president-elect of the Ohio Choral Directors Association (OCDA) and chair of vocal affairs for the Ohio Music Education Association.

Awards & distinctions

She has served as national children’s choir coordinator and secretary for the Organization of American Kodály Educators (OAKE), treasurer for the Tri-City Kodály Music Educators (TRIKE), chair of creative affairs for the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA), assistant choral advisor for the Organization of American Kodály Educators (OAKE), and artistic and educational director for the Ohio Choral Directors Association (OCDA).

Jeanne Wohlgamuth has also received several awards, including Best Conductor at the Rimini International Choral Competition 2021, the Conductor’s Mastery Award at the Professor Beneta Vicheva International Competition 2021, Teacher of the Year from the Kodály Music Educators organization, Teacher of the Year at several institutions (Dublin Jerome High School, Karrer Middle School, Wright Elementary, and Bowen Elementary School in Kentwood, Michigan). She was also honored with the Golden Shamrock Award in the Excellence in Education category from Dublin City Schools, as well as the Community Champion Award from the Dublin Chamber of Commerce.
