Cantabile Vocal Ensemble

Cantabile Vocal Ensemble

Choir presentation

Founded in 2004, the Cantabile Vocal Ensemble initially performed a variety repertoire. Following the departure of its founders, the “Cantabile” choir underwent a significant transformation for a year with a young “classical” conductor who was then a conservatory student.

Since 2013, conductor Sébastien PORTELLI and the new management team have developed the choir.

Each year, led by its conductor, the choir organizes concerts and exchanges with groups at both local and regional levels.

It regularly exchanges with the music directors of the Lutheran church in Kassel, Germany, who bring groups of choristers.

It also hosted an Italian choir in 2015, participated in a performance of Carmina Burana at the Zénith de Toulon in 2016, in two concerts of Vivaldi’s Gloria in Toulon and Marseille in 2019, and in concerts of Puccini’s Mass in 2023, with other performances planned for this autumn.

THE CHOIR DIRECTOR: Sébastien Portelli

Born in the Toulon region in 1975, he has remained deeply attached to it. During his musical studies at the Toulon Conservatory from 1982 to 1998, he studied piano, percussion, saxhorn, and finally music history and composition.

After his training, Sébastien taught music in middle school for a time, then changed paths, and in 2013, he reconnected with music by taking over the direction of the Cantabile choir in Garéoult, then in 2016 of the Chorale Clair Matin, and in 2018 of the Chœurs Polyphoniques de l’USAM.

In 2017, he founded “Envergure,” a ‘Youth’ choir, in Toulon.

Drawn to orchestral conducting, he resumed musical studies at the Toulon Conservatory in the Conducting class with Messrs. Melin, Pairier, and Maes. This enthusiast is also an instrumentalist (percussion) and loves to sing tenor when needed in a choir.

His open-mindedness, precise work on scores, good humor, and kindness are appreciated by all choristers.
