Founded in 2023 in Randburg, Laudem Dei Chamber Choir brings together 36 singers around a demanding repertoire, from sacred music to contemporary a cappella works.

Founded in September 2023 in Randburg, in the Johannesburg region, Laudem Dei Chamber Choir is an adult chamber choir born from the desire to promote excellence in choral singing within the local community. Its name, meaning “Praise God”, expresses the inspiration that drives the ensemble. Singers are selected by audition, and the choir now has 36 members.

Its repertoire combines accompanied works with demanding a cappella pieces, across a wide diversity of styles. Among its landmark projects is a performance of Ola Gjeilo’s Sunrise Mass with a string ensemble bringing together musicians from the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2026, the choir also takes part in the Zoid Psalm project with South African artist Karen Zoid. Laudem Dei comes to Provence with a musical identity shaped by precision, rich vocal colours and the pleasure of singing together.

THE CHOIR DIRECTOR: Laura De Waal

Founder and conductor of Laudem Dei Chamber Choir, Laura De Waal teaches singing and music production and runs her own vocal studio in Randburg. A graduate in drama from the University of Pretoria, she sang with the University of Pretoria Camerata and the Akustika Chamber Singers. Holder of the LRSM in singing and a diploma in music theory from Unisa, she continues her vocal training at the highest level. Also an arranger and composer, she places work on the human voice at the heart of her artistic approach.
