MSGA Youth Choir

Choir presentation

The MSGA Youth Choir has been meeting since 2014. The choir is composed of young people aged 16 to 23, all of whom attend our school, as well as students who continue to participate after completing their secondary studies.

There is no special musical education at the school, and most of the singers have never attended music schools. It is the passion for singing together that keeps the choral tradition alive.

The choir holds regular weekly rehearsals as extracurricular activities, which are further enriched by a choir camp in September organized with our children’s and girls’ choirs.

The choir members are proud to represent their city, region, and country, as well as the Hungarian minority living in Slovakia, through the many concerts they perform both at home and abroad.

The repertoire ranges from the Renaissance to the 21st century, performed a cappella and with musical accompaniment in various languages: Hungarian, Slovak, Latin, English, and Italian.

Particular emphasis is placed on mastering unison singing through arrangements of traditional Hungarian songs.

The choir’s repertoire also includes madrigals and other joyful pieces with piano accompaniment.

Awards & distinctions

The Youth Choir has won numerous awards in recent years in international competitions such as:

– Gold medal and special jury mention at the “Éneklő Ifjúság” National Choir Competition in Eger, Hungary (2018)

– 2nd prize in the Girls’ Choir category at the 66th EMJ International Festival of Children and Youth Choirs in Neerpelt, Belgium (2018)

– 1st prize at the 3rd Voices for Peace festival in Perugia, Italy (2019)

THE CHOIR DIRECTOR: Silvia Kekenák and Andrea Ferencei

The choir members are led by two conductors: Ms. Silvia Kekenák and Ms. Andrea Ferencei, both former choir members, with Ms. Kekenak also being the daughter of our choirs’ founder.

The conductors have worked together for over 20 years within the same school and have developed and shared a flourishing cooperation based on mutual respect, the joy of teaching young people, and a love for choral singing.
