PP Godjica Choir

Choir presentation

The choir was founded in 1990. Since its inception, the choir has actively participated in the celebrations of its original presbytery, the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary in Vranov nad Topľou. The choir has been considered a representative of the Cyrillo-Methodian tradition for over 32 years.

It has performed in many different venues, including small churches and wooden churches, as well as various large cathedrals in Slovakia and abroad, including Austria, Germany, Poland, Czechia, Hungary, Croatia, Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, France, and Ukraine.

Its repertoire consists of numerous sacred Slavic chants, liturgical and religious songs, as well as spiritual academies with spoken word. The choir is composed of religious individuals of different ages who enjoy spending time together singing during celebrations, liturgies, and festivals.

Awards & distinctions

1996 – The choir released its first album, “Chvalite Hospoda.”

1997 – Release of the second audio album titled “Akatist k Bohorodičke.”

1999 – Silver medal at the Iuventus mundi cantat sacred music competition in Olomouc (CZ)

2000 – Performance at the national pilgrimage of Slovaks in Rome (IT) and participation in the Eucharistic Congress in Bratislava (SK)

2001 – Participation in the beatification of Bishop Pavol Peter Gojdič and Bishop Dominik Trčka in Rome.

2004 – Release of the first CD titled “Tebe pojem.”

2005 – Third place at the International Festival of Orthodox Music in Hajnówka (PL)

2009 – Second place at the International Festival of Sacred Music in Bialystok (PL)

2013 – The choir recorded its second CD, “V načale bie slovo.”

2013 – Bronze Medal at the XVI International Festival of Sacred Music – Psalite Deo 2013 in Kety (PL).

2014 – Gold at the 34th Viliam Figuš Bystrý National Choral Music Festival in Banská Bystrica (SK).

2019 – Commemorative medal awarded by Archbishop Mons. Ján Babjak for the perennial representation of the Greek Catholic Church in Slovakia and abroad.

2021 – The choir had the great honor of performing during the liturgy led by Pope Francis in Prešov (SK).

2022 – Silver Medal at the international festival MUSICA ORBIS in Prague (CZ)

THE CHOIR DIRECTOR: Mária Šandorová

Ms. Mária Šandorová has conducted the choir since its founding in 1990. She is a graduate of the Faculty of Education, specializing in primary education and music education. She is a primary school principal and also leads liturgical singing at the presbytery and school.
