The Cantate Deo Choir of the Holy Cross Parish in Tychy-Czułów began its activities in November 2008. The choir is made up of students, professionals, and retirees. The main objective of the Cantate Deo Choir is to serve the Holy Cross Parish of Tychy-Czułów.

Artistic Direction & Musical Repertoire

The choirmaster has been Michał Brożek since the beginning. He is a graduate of the Academy of Music in Katowice, where he studied orchestral conducting with Professor Dr Iwona Melson.
The choir’s repertoire consists mainly of religious works from different periods, ranging from the Renaissance to contemporary compositions. In addition to sacred music, the choir also performs arrangements of popular music.

Recordings & Publications

The choir has released two albums: Gabriel Fauré’s “Requiem Mass” and an album of Polish Christmas carols.

Awards & distinctions

Over its 17 years of activity, the choir has taken part in national and international choral competitions and festivals, where it has received numerous awards.
Among the ensemble’s most recent achievements are the 2nd place at the 30th Myślenice Choral Festival “Carols and Pastoral Songs” in 2025, qualification for the 2nd stage of the Tychy Christmas Carol Evenings in 2024, and the award of a silver diploma at the National Choral Singing Competition during the 15th Silesian Choral Music Festival “Magnificat” in Bytom in November 2022.

In December 2022, the Cantate Deo Choir received a silver diploma at the 7th International Music Festival named after Professor Józef Świder in Cieszyn. In June 2023, the choir celebrated its 15th anniversary by performing the oratorio “Have the Courage to Live for Love”, composed by conductor Michał Brożek especially for the jubilee.

THE CHOIR DIRECTOR: Michal Brozek

Michał Brożek – conductor, organist, composer, music teacher. He is a graduate of the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice.

Career & Training

In 2009, he obtained a bachelor’s degree with two specialisations: Music Education and conducting of vocal and vocal-instrumental ensembles, as well as church music.
In 2011, he obtained his master’s degree with honours in the following specialisations: Choral Conducting with theoretical and musical courses in the conducting class of Professor Iwona Melson, and Music Education with theoretical and musical courses.
In 2010, he took part in the 13th National Choral Conducting Competition in Poznań. During his studies, in 2008, he founded the “Cantate Deo” choir at the Holy Cross Parish in Tychy and, in 2013, he became the conductor of the choir of the University of Economics in Katowice.

He gives concerts in Poland and abroad, including in Italy, Spain, France, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Macedonia, and China.

Musical Direction & Recordings

Since 2015, he has been the artistic director of the local Christmas carols and pastoral songs review in Tychy for primary schools, middle schools and high schools. Since 2018, he has also been the artistic director of the Metropolitan Choral Festival in Katowice.

He has successfully conducted many vocal and instrumental concerts, such as J. Rutter’s Magnificat, G. Fauré’s Requiem, J.S. Bach’s Mass in B minor, W. Kilar’s Missa pro Pace and K. Jenkins’s Stabat Mater. He has recorded 4 CDs: Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem; albums of songs recorded with the “Cantate Deo” choir and the choir of the University of Economics in Katowice; and the CD Caelesti lumine, which contains sacred songs performed by the choir of the University of Economics in Katowice.

Awards & distinctions

He has won numerous prizes and distinctions with his ensembles, the most recent of which are as follows:

  • 1st place in the mixed choirs category and the Grand Prix at the 10th International Choral Competition “Music & Sea” in Paralia, Greece (2022).
  • Gold medal in the academic choirs category and a special prize for the best performance of a sacred piece at the 17th International Choral Festival “Gaude Cantem” in Bielsko-Biała (2022),
  • Gold medal and 1st Prize at the National Choral Tournament Legnica Cantat 53 in Legnica, and a prize for the best performance of a contemporary Polish composer (2023),
  • 1st Prize in the mixed choir category and 3rd place in the Grand Prix Competition at the International Choir Competition in Provence (2023).

In addition, he was awarded as the best conductor of the International Choir Competition in Provence 2023, and was therefore invited to serve as a jury member for the 2024 edition.

He has also repeatedly received a special prize for Best Choir Conductor at other choral festivals and competitions.
